Building Healthier Communities Through NB Lung’s Impact
In April 2024, the community of Havelock, New Brunswick lost a champion of health and advocacy, Angela Stief Leah. Angela’s legacy of compassion and dedication to her community extended far beyond her hometown of Havelock, where she worked tirelessly as a physiotherapist. Her passion for helping others led her to become a vocal advocate for raising awareness about radon-induced lung cancer, a silent danger lurking in many homes across New Brunswick.
In honor of Angela’s commitment to community care, NB Lung launched the Angela’s Allies Community Fund, aiming to improve access to radon testing and mitigation. Through Angela’s Allies, NB Lung provided over 363 radon test kits to homes in Havelock alone, with plans to expand these efforts across the province.
Tragically, Angela’s battle with radon-induced lung cancer came to an end on April 18, 2024. Her passing left a void in the hearts of her loved ones and the community she served. However, her spirit lives on in the work of NB Lung and the ongoing fight against radon exposure.
Recent initiatives by NB Lung, including Community Radon Testing Drives and advocacy efforts, have seen significant progress in raising awareness about the dangers of radon and providing resources for testing and mitigation. Despite these strides, there is much work to be done to ensure the safety of every home in New Brunswick.
The urgency of this mission is underscored by recent findings highlighting New Brunswick’s high prevalence of homes with elevated radon levels. Radon, an odorless and tasteless radioactive gas, poses a significant health risk, particularly as the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
NB Lung is calling on the province to take action by funding programs for radon testing and mitigation, making these essential services accessible to all New Brunswickers. The cost of mitigation can be prohibitive for many families, and NB Lung advocates for financial support to alleviate this burden and protect public health.
As we reflect on Angela’s legacy and the importance of her advocacy, we are reminded of the power of community action. By supporting initiatives like the Angela’s Allies Community Fund and participating in radon testing drives, we can honor Angela’s memory and work towards a healthier future for all New Brunswickers.
