Lung Health:
COPD
Did You Know?
About 1 in 5 New Brunswick seniors lives with COPD.
COPD means Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
It is a term that covers two types of long-term diseases: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The airways (breathing tubes) in the lungs become swollen and partly blocked. This makes it difficult for you to breathe in and makes you feel tired. You may also cough, cough up mucus and feel short of breath.
Smoking is the number one cause of COPD.
Other risk factors include:
-
-
-
- Regular exposure to second-hand smoke
- Occupational exposure to dusts and chemicals
- High levels of air pollution
- History of repeated lung infections
- Genetic factors

COPD gets worse over time. It cannot be cured, but it can be treated and managed.
People with COPD are susceptible to lung infections and should take care to maintain their vacations and prevent infection.
Talk to your health care professional about the medications available to reduce or control symptoms.
Our friends at Lung NS-PEI offer a COPD Virtual Support Group, which is open to New Brunswickers.

Regardless of the severity of your symptoms, COPD patients must exercise. Even a short walk around the house is helpful to help improve your breathing.
Aim for 5-15 minutes of walking 3-4 times each day.
