NB Lung commends the Government of New Brunswick for the 2025-2026 Provincial Budget announced today, which reflects a commitment to enhancing health care and environmental sustainability.
Health Care Investments
The allocation of an additional $293 million to the Department of Health, with targeted investments in stabilizing and strengthening primary care, is a significant step toward reducing the number of New Brunswickers without primary care providers. Notably, the provision of free access to the RSV vaccine for all residents over the age of 75 aligns with our advocacy for preventive measures to protect vulnerable populations.
While the budget lacks specifics on lung cancer prevention through increased access to radon testing and raising the legal purchasing age of commercial tobacco, we will continue to advocate for these cost-effective preventative strategies. We are also continuing to advocate for removing barriers to social supports for breathing devices like CPAPs.
Environmental Initiatives
We are encouraged by the continued funding for the energy efficiency fund and the enhanced energy-saving program under the Department of Environment and Local Government. Maintaining the Environmental Trust Fund at last year’s level, despite the loss of revenue from beverage container deposits, demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship.
We look forward to continuing to engage with the government on modernizing the Clean Air Act, evaluating indoor air protections for indoor air in public buildings, and advocating for enhanced electric vehicle rebates.
Stakeholder Engagement
We appreciate the opportunity to have participated as a stakeholder in the pre-budget lock-in this morning, engaging in meaningful discussions with government representatives. This collaborative approach is vital for developing policies that effectively address the health and environmental challenges facing New Brunswickers.
Looking forward
NB Lung remains committed to working alongside the government and other stakeholders to implement these initiatives, aiming to enhance lung health and environmental quality throughout our province. We look forward to continued engagement as the government operationalizes their departmental budgets and we will continue to advocate for preventative, equitable public policy to support lung health and protect the air we share.
