At NB Lung, we’re focused on one thing—protecting everyone’s right to breathe clean air. From fighting for Lung Transplant Patients to advocating for cleaner transportation options, our work is rooted in science and public health. And right now, the shift away from fossil fuels is a key part of reducing air pollution and protecting lung health.

But myths and misinformation still make some people hesitant. Let’s clear the air—literally and figuratively.

Myth #1: EVs don’t go far enough—and there aren’t enough chargers in New Brunswick

Fact: Most modern EVs offer 300–500 km of range per charge, while the average New Brunswicker drives less than 200 km per day. That means daily errands and even road trips are well within reach.

New Brunswick already has more than 126 public charging stations, including Level 3 fast chargers every ~65 km along major routes like the Trans-Canada Highway, meaning a public station is always just around the corner.

Myth #2: NB winters kill EV batteries

Fact: It’s true that cold can reduce range by up to 30%—but most daily drives in NB are still easily covered. EVs also warm up faster than gas cars, so your January commute can start off cozy.

Modern EVs are designed with thermal battery management systems, meaning cold weather won’t significantly degrade battery lifespan. In fact, cool climates like NB’s are easier on EV batteries than extreme heat.

Myth #3: EVs are expensive to maintain and repair

Fact: EVs have fewer moving parts than gas vehicles—no oil changes, no mufflers, and reduced brake wear thanks to regenerative braking. Over time, that means 30–50% lower maintenance costs.

In smaller communities, repairs may feel like a concern, but many issues are software-related and can be handled remotely or by mobile technicians. EV maintenance is simpler, not harder.

Stop Fossil Fuel Investments

New Brunswickers are being asked to accept a future built on fossil fuels — and told it’s about “energy security” and “green transition.” But behind the greenwashed language, plans are unfolding to build new gas infrastructure in Tantramar, [and] expand operations in Belledune…

Myth #4: EV batteries don’t last

Fact: Most EV batteries are built to last. Today’s models retain 80%+ capacity after 8–10 years, with some lasting over 20 years. All EVs sold in Canada come with a minimum 8-year/160,000 km battery warranty.

And with advances in battery recycling, up to 95% of materials can now be reused—meaning fewer raw materials and a cleaner planet.

Myth #5: EVs pollute more over their lifetime than gas cars

Fact: Even when you count the emissions from manufacturing and electricity use, EVs still produce up to 71% less carbon pollution than gas cars over their lifetime.

And as New Brunswick’s electricity grid becomes cleaner, EVs will get even greener. Switching to electric is one of the most impactful choices we can make to improve air quality and prevent lung disease.

Why This Matters to NB Lung

Vehicle emissions are one of the most significant contributors to air pollution in New Brunswick, and air pollution is directly linked to asthma, lung cancer, and other respiratory illnesses.

By encouraging the shift to cleaner transportation like EVs, we’re not just fighting climate change—we’re fighting for your right to breathe clean air.

Cleaner vehicles mean cleaner air. And cleaner air means healthier lungs for everyone.
